A native Kansan with a heart for his homeland.
The legacy of one of Kansas' proudest sons is helping to
ensure that the state will benefit from its home-grown talent long into
the future. John L. Weigand, Jr., a Kansas native with a love for the law,
established the J. L. Weigand, Jr. Notre Dame Legal Education Trust to
provide assistance to Kansans seeking to pursue an education in law.
Long before his death in 2002, Mr. Weigand, a lawyer
himself, expressed his desire to establish a trust for the benefit of
Kansas residents attending law school. His wish was to help educate the
state's finest students who, in turn, would practice law in Kansas for the
betterment of its citizens.
In 2003, the Weigand Trust was established as
a direct result of Mr. Weigand's foresight, intelligence and sacrifice.
Today, the trust works aggressively to assist law students from
Kansas by arranging clerkship and employment interviews and providing full
tuition scholarships at Notre Dame Law School, the University of Kansas
Law School, and Washburn Law School.
Through his ongoing legacy, Mr.
Weigand's many contributions and positive impact on the Kansas legal
community will continue for perpetuity. The J. L. Weigand, Jr. Legal
Education Trust will carry on his rich love for the law and love for
Kansas .
