Am I eligible for a scholarship?

To be eligible for a Weigand Trust Scholarship, you must be able to answer yes to all three of the following questions:

  • Have you been a legal resident of the State of Kansas for at least ten (10) years prior to college graduation?
  • Have you taken the LSAT?
  • Are you applying to Notre Dame Law School,  Washburn Law School, or KU Law School?

I am attending an out of state undergraduate college.  Can I still apply? 

As long as you have been a legal Kansas resident for a minimum of ten (10) years, you can apply.

Are there any age restrictions for applicants?

This program has no age restrictions or limitations as long as applicants meet eligibility requirements.

What are the application deadlines?

All documents must be postmarked or received no later than February 15th annually.

What are the key dates in the Weigand Trust scholarship application and selection process?

February 15 All Application documents due.
Mid-March Selection Committee Reviews Documents
Late March Interviews may be conducted.
March 31st Scholarship offers are extended
April 1st All applicants are notified of their final acceptance status.

How do I obtain application materials if I do not have Internet Access?

Do I have to wait until I've been accepted into law school before I apply? 

No.  Simply indicate that you're awaiting acceptance on your application.  As soon as you receive notification from your school's admittance office, please contact us so we can update your file.

What happens if my application is incomplete or arrives after the deadline?

Only complete applications that have arrived or are postmarked by the deadline will be considered for review.  It is your responsibility to ensure that all transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. have been sent in a timely manner.  Please do not hesitate to contact our office at any time to confirm receipt of your application and/or additional documents. 

Incomplete information does not constitute an application and, thus, will not be considered, and will be destroyed.

Are the scholarships automatically renewed? 

No.  Scholarship recipients must reapply annually.  If students remain in good standing with their school and community, the Selection Committee is honored to renew their scholarship.

How much support does the Weigand Trust Scholarship provide?

Weigand Scholarships are the nation's largest legal education scholarships.  We provide for full tuition, fees, and books, and provide a generous room and board allowance.

Are Weigand Scholars allowed to receive other grants or scholarships and still retain the Weigand Trust Scholarship?

Since the Weigand Scholarships pay for 100% of books, tuition and fees, no other scholarship is allowed for those purposes.  Additional scholarships for room and board are allowed only if they do not exceed the maximum financial aid allowed, established by the school.

Will I be liable for taxes on the scholarship?

Receipt of the Weigand Scholarships represents no tax liability for the students.

What are the chances of being awarded a scholarship?

Actually, they're much better than a national scholarship.  Since the Weigand Scholarships are awarded ONLY to long-term Kansas residents, the potential total applicant base is no more than several hundred applicants.
